The Importance of Self-Expression In Media

Music as a way of representing individualism, and identity is a concept in the culture industry that has brought much controversy. This is the case, because according tothe article “ The Culture Industry,” by Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimer, our societyis deficient in owning up to this phenomenon. According to Adorno and Horkeimer, we are living in a society where popular media is becoming a commodity of repetition, and a business of reproducing mass culture. In today’s society, the music industry has become a substance of competition and dominance, where many artists are trying to stand out, when in fact their individual art, and style is missing.

One group that negotiates with self-expression is ‘The Beatles.’ They’re a group that not only remains true to themselves, but they have reached out to society in a way that is inspiring. The Beatles have put themselves out there in the market, and they have reached their full potential, by making their style, and sounding unique. The concept of self-expression is important in the music industry in order to maintain individuality and to avoid reproducing something that has already been produced. A group that encompasses this logic is ‘The Beatles.’ Before going into further explanation of why ‘The Beatles’ represent a special identity, Adorno and Horkeimer’s controversy must be addressed and explained in further depth.

In the article “The Culture Industry” they state, “The peculiarity of the self is a monopoly commodity determined by society; it is falsely represented as natural.” (Adorno & Horkeimer, 41). Adorno and Horkheimer in simpler terms are critiquing society by reinforcing that it is in a condition of artificial awareness, and that our culture is broken under authority because of the 1 capitalism that is taking place in the modern world. Another argument that is important inunderlying mass culture is when the article states, “In the culture industry the individual is an illusion not merely because of the standardization of the means of production.” (41).To get an understanding of this we can turn to pop stars such as Britney Spears, Rhianna, and Lady Gaga. They all share similar characteristics and our society is attracted to them. The music industry takes note of this and then begins to create more ‘Britney’s’ and ‘Rhiannas.’ Unfortunately this is what it has come to, but with taking a closer look at

‘The Beatles,’ it can be seen how they remain true to their art. The Beatles are a group that epitomizes what Adorno and Horkeimer are trying to pinpoint. They remain individual because no other artist today in the twenty first century is able to compare with them. They have this unique sound, which makes them able to produce so many songs. Looking at this review that focuses on one of their many albums,it is evident in seeing how this group remains so popular. Their first psychedelic masterpiece, Revolver represents the Beatles at their most creative and cohesive, still a tight rocking unit firing on all cylinders but with a surging freedom of self-expression. It is arguably their greatest album, in which they introduce whole new vistas of sound yet still contain them within tightly structured and performed songs (McCormick, 1)

By what McCormick states, it can be seen why this group has been able to leave an influence for today’s generation. The Beatles are able to leave a lasting impact on their fans, and they’ve laid out originality in the album revolver by seeking out what society wants to hear, but still remaining true to their sound. Even as they are not a group anymore, their music is still listened to, and therefore they will never be forgotten. The Beatles were the first British group to ever write their own songs and music, and they therefore can never be replaced which makes them the reality of music. Lastly, the group has been able to create music that holds meaning in their songs. “Sure, they had their share of “yeah, yeah, yeah” songs in the beginning, but songs such as “We Can Work It Out,” “In My Life,” and just about anything on Sgt. Pepper simply include timeless messages – all packaged in beautiful music.” (Russel,1)

Through the understanding of Adorno and Horkeimer’s article, the main idea to grasp is that the modern world has transformed art into a business. This has caused the entertainment industry to manufacture music that satisfies the needs of society, but it has been done in such a way, where repetition is gained, and individuality is lost. Many artists today share a similar art, and are lacking their own identity, but ‘The Beatles,’ are a group that have shed light upon self-expression. They carry many great qualities such as carrying songs that hold meaning, producing music that reaches out to their fans, and leaving an influence for today’s generation of artists. The main influence being that the band was able to be a part of the music industry for many years and maintain succession. Adorno and Horkeimer’s article informs society of what mass culture, media, and technology has converted to. Although the industry has replicated artists in order to maintain the business of advertising, and making money it doesn’t mean that other artists can’t remain true to their art.

Why Spotify is Better Than Apple Music

When it comes to listening and streaming music these days, you have the luxury of streaming and listening to it in your phone. Listening to music has come a long way and although people still use YouTube, the most popular way to listen to music on your phone is through Apple music or Spotify. But which one should you download and pay for? If you have an android Huawei phone you have the option to choose either, as you can download Apple Music on a Huawei phone, despite it not being an IPhone.

Spotify All The Way

Personally I first had Apple Music and I liked it. You pay $10.00 a month and get the first 30 days free. I download a lot of music so it was worth the monthly fee. I enjoyed everything about Apple Music but when I found out about Spotify and that it had some added features I made the switch over to Spotify. When something lacks creativity and doesn’t have something better to offer then it’s always good to change things up. Spotify is great, because when you Shazam a song that song goes right into your Spotify.

The Perks

I also discovered that if you are following certain artists it let’s you know when they are in concert. Spotify also does pre-sale promos for concerts. The option to listen to podcasts is also nice. You can also find music easier with Spotify and it downloads faster.

Another great pro with Spotify music is that Spotify is renowned for helping people find alternate or cover versions of their favorite songs. Type in “Folsom Prison Blues,” and you’ll see live versions and covers by other well-known (and not-so-well-known) musicians. In fact, one of the company’s big strengths is that its reach helps lesser-known artists expose the broader world to their brand of music.

Another great bonus is that huge music storage is available. Spotify’s free and paying users both have access to the same library of “more than 40 million songs. In addition, Spotify offers free and paid membership. Logically, with Spotify free, you aren’t allowed to enjoy many features that Premium account offers.

However, with Free account, you can listen to the music you love on the go, create your own playlists, discover new music, share the music and the playlists with your friends, and more. But, if you choose to subscribe to Spotify Premium, you get to enjoy the full Spotify experience.

Lastly, it is simple to use. When it comes to Spotify, everything is so simple. You will easily find all the things you need, organize your playlists, explore new music, listen to the radio, and more. Exploring all its features and things it offers is quite an enjoyment.

Local EDM group Tennyson is flying high

Are you wondering where the Canadian EDM talent lies in 2017?  Normally EDM artists fly solo, but with this dynamic duo, working alone is no option. This Canadian brother-sister act that can turn anything into music. The duo (Luke and Tess) are from Edmonton, Canada.  This teenage brother-sister duo is packed with immense musical flair and skills. Luke, 20, and Tess, 18, they make look angelic but they sure can put on a show. Luke writes the syncopated tunes, and Tess provides mind-numbing live percussion. A girl on drums is so kick-ass is it not? Skrillex is apparently a big fan of the duo, which is great for them trying to get to make it big in the EDM scene. Luke is heading to Los Angeles this year to get as creative as he can, so you can absolutely be expecting big sounds from Tennyson.

Luke and Tess- dynamic duo

edm

Luke and Tess a brother and sister act from Canada started busking the streets of Edmonton at ages of seven and nine, which is pretty amazing. They have gradually but surely matured into one of the most eccentric artists in the music scene with their blend of Jazz music and electronica gaining attention of producers like Ryan Hemsworth, Lido and as mentioned Skrillex. What makes them stand out is that they don’t sing about anything – their music is instrumental. It is wildly active, full of keyboard play and arpeggios. It is also very authentic sounding, which doesn’t make them imitators. As Emerson has said, imitation is suicide. Let’s face it; do we really need another David Guetta or Tiesto? Many artists these days are sampling other artist’s tracks and even though it is allowed it lacks originality.

Their sound

edm2

The duo are known to use that really rather exasperating tone, in the structure of a loop, which is a repeating section of sound material. It creates repetitive ostinato patterns. As the basis for what is a very pleasant electronic lullaby. It is ultimately up to the listener and their taste or preference, but you will either find it annoying or compulsive and addicting. Or it will make you want to go for a ride (but fasten your seat-belt first).

The duo posted it on SoundCloud hoping that the song would spark a reminder for people to slow down. At times gloominess can be picturesque. So far, because of their age, they have not always been taken seriously: “It’s like the Series of Unfortunate events siblings started an electronica band,” according to one review. Or they’ve been greeted with an applause, as people should. Young talent is emerging these days and it will continue to.

 Started at a young age

 edm3

As mentioned, the brother sister team apparently started busking in Edmonton from the age of seven and nine, playing fronts of tunes by the Beatles, Coldplay and Weezer. That is undeniably amazing as those are some outstanding and exceptionally supported groups. When Luke was 12 they had recorded two collections of jazz music. At that point in 2012, he created his initially arrival of unique (electronic) material, and this year he chose to join his adoration for jazz and electronica, with his sister on drums. Combining two genres isn’t something that is totally out of the ordinary. Many successful artists have done it. Look at Avicii- he combined country and electronica, and it was genius.

Tennyson’s Influences

edm4

It is always important to look at an artist’s influences, it tells a lot about their character, flare and their sound. Flying Lotus is one of Luke’s influences – along with Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada, Bonobo, and James Blake. In contemporary electronic music inspiration can come from anywhere. Sites like Soundcloud are loaded with craftsmen who draw on a number of impacts and thoughts to make something that they can call their own. However, Edmonton electronic act Tennyson emerge just on the grounds that they are the principal gathering to concede their sound may have started from the world’s most prominent purple dinosaur—Barney.

Subliminally [Barney’s Sleepy time Songs] influenced their music. They really found these old VHS tapes of when they were close to nothing and Luke was absolutely into Barney endeavoring to chime in, yet his mouth wasn’t created enough to state the words. Not that it’s a worry with the couple, as words regularly change into tests against Luke’s testy synths.

Originating from a group of traditionally prepared artists, Luke (creation) and sister Tess (drums/percussion) have dependably been entertainers. Tess says the two began playing piano and drums as meager children busking in the city of Edmonton, covering melodies by Weezer and Nirvana. “The first occasion when we played together, I was seven and he was nine, and we’ve been playing together from that point onward, to the point where it just feels normal,” says Tess. That is crude ability in that spot, as should be obvious they both knew this was their obsession and profession from the beginning.

As they developed into adolescents, they took their first shot at a full venture, discharging jazz cover collections. Luke would likewise soon begin fiddling with electronic music. The electronic genre was something Luke was improving.  The situation was an afterthought and afterward he got increasingly into it and figured out how to function in the jazz music him and his sister have been improving.

Affected by any semblance of Boards of Canada and Radiohead, Tennyson began combining jazz with darker tones at long last discharging their 2012 self-titled presentation and the Blamer EP not long after. Both went generally unnoticed. Underrated, the team focused on their own sound while discharging a constant flow of new tracks on SoundCloud, in the end getting the consideration of maker Ryan Hemsworth with the moving merry go round and smooth midi keys on their remix of Angus and Julia Stone’s “For You.” Taken aback by the energy of their melodic creations, Hemsworth put Tennyson’s track “You’re Cute” as the first in his month to month Secret Songs arrangement.

What makes Toronto good/bad for EDM?

edm5.jpg

In the world of electronic dance music, summer is high season. It consistently brings another celebration. The show starts in May and manufactures, similar to a crashing EDM track, into a touchy peak: the Veld Music Festival, a monster two-day bacchanal that colonizes Downsview Park each August. A year ago, almost 40,000 individuals pressed into the recreation center for the all-ages EDM celebration.

Ink Entertainment, the occasion coordinator, had enlisted 40 medical staff, eight EMS laborers, one MD, four ambulances, 280 security protects, 15 security chiefs and 26 paid obligation officers to stay nearby for the length. A proportion that shook out to around 130 shouting, stoned ravers for each calm grown-up. There were armies of tanked adolescents furnished with fake IDs, yet the more serious issue was the drug use: the celebration was overflowing with GHB, MDMA and cocaine. Throughout the end of the week, no less than 15 individuals took something that landed them in the doctor’s facility, and two kicked the bucket of overdoses.

One was Annie Truong-Le, a truly, petite 20-year-old poli-sci major at York University, who took something at Veld. She lost cognizance, was raced to a clinic and never woke up. The other was Willard Amurao, a burly 22-year-old Ajax man, who likewise took drugs at Veld. Police spotted him stumbling out and immediately called for EMS. Police bounded him to a stretcher. He went into heart failure in the rescue vehicle and was articulated dead at the healing facility.

Examination reports uncovered that both Truong-Le and Amurao had taken MDMA. This goes to show you that EDM has a bad reputation and label with drugs, but this is because EDM music maintains a relationship with the party scene. This doesn’t mean that people have to do drugs or that EDM music has to be established as negative. People can and should go to Veld to enjoy the music and not to experiment with drugs. These events are meant to celebrate and enjoy the music and to unite with others. It should be a joyous time and not where people are overdosing on drugs.

They Can’t Slow Down

edm6.jpg

Luke and Tess have been playing music for as long as they can remember. Their dad, a drummer, impacted them to seek after the workmanship as children, playing jazz, blues, and works of art like the Beatles, and busking around town. For Luke, making music fell into place without any issues. As you would expect, he began seeking it at such a youthful age.

Before Luke grew up and had this attention to himself, he had these aptitudes. Tess joined Tennyson in her mid-teens. With Luke on production and console and Tess on drums, the band’s music recounts a story without words.

After the couple started posting their music on Soundcloud more than four years back, they increased such a following, that Ryan Hemsworth, a Toronto-based electronic performer and maker, discovered their music and imparted it to his supervisor, who wound up lifting the team up. As indicated by Luke and Tess, the Internet is truly what’s been in charge of their prosperity. Social media is such a power medium these days. It is great for marketing, sharing, communicating and advertising. As Marshall McLuhan said “The medium is the message.”

Unveiling Paramore’s Fifth Studio Album: After Laughter

The Alternative Pop/rock band Paramore is set to come out with their fifth studio album called After Laughter on May 12th.

Although Paramore is classified as a pop/rock band, they are  known as one of those bands that like to experiment with their sounds. While fans in the past have been critical of their experimentation with genre, it showcases their eccentricity. It is important for bands to experiment with their sound as they discover what works and what doesn’t and as it glorifies development. Paramore’s latest album After Laughter is an alternative/indie genre and without a doubt this is a genre that is trending and flooding the charts. This fifth album showcases their success as a band as they are still coming out with music despite losing band members in the past and being on a hiatus.

Hard Times

Looking at their song Hard Times“, it is very different from their known sound from their earlier albums such as Riot!, as it was a harder and more rock sound. After Laughter does clash with their fourth album self titled album, through lyrical content and through nuances of sound. The song contains an 80’s vibe to it, which brings in both old and new aspects. The new aspect corresponding to the lyrics of “Hard Times“. It is definitely a song that many can relate to as many of us go through obstacles and difficult times that cause us to develop such issues like anxiety. As May is mental health month, the release of this song and the album fits perfectly. In addition, mental health has become a very prevalent issue and awareness affecting many young adults this year.

“Hard Times” unfolds the depression that lead singer Hayley Williams dealt with in 2016, because of personal issues in the band as well as facing the reality of growing up. She told The New York Times: “You can run on the fumes of being a teenager for as long as you want, but eventually life hits you real hard.”

The first verse of the song inevitably highlights the day in the life of what it is like to feel anxiety and or depression and deal with the overbearing stresses of life.

All that I want is to wake up fine

To tell me that I’m alright, that I ain’t gonna die

All that I want is a hole in the ground.

You can tell me when it’s alright for me to come out.”

Told You So

Paramore’s second single “Told You So,” is another song that deals with hardship and struggle.  “Told You So” is about hard times faced when individuals view your every move anticipating you to fail. The key subject matter corresponds to the lyric, “Hate to say I told you so,” If you listen to the song you’ll notice it is profoundly sung in a complaisant, and unfavourable manner.  Hayley Williams explained in an interview: “Zac noticed that my anxiety and overall state was just a lot more peaceful on those drives…and [he] mentioned to me that it made him happy to see me rest for a moment. It means a lot that they conceptualized a video around a passing moment we had as friends.”

The song maintains a funky vibe to it as it coincides with a polyrhythmic funk pop genre. Adding additional colour to their sound with tropical rhythms that can be associated with Hawaiian sounds and summer-y electro-pop.

It’s no doubt that the band has gone through struggles, and were close to splitting up before they released their self-titled album, but to overcome those struggles is what is important and that is what Paramore has done. To come forth with your issues and be able to construct them in a song is groundbreaking.

Why Ed Sheeran Is The Man of The Hour

While Ed Sheeran may not be the best looking musician it doesn’t matter, as he is a talented songwriter and musician. He is far from a one hit wonder, which shows that he is going to be making music for a long time. His top hit and single “Shape of You” is still number one on iTunes and that shouldn’t be of any surprise. Ed Sheeran has without a doubt left a lasting impression on many by going from rags to riches.

He doesn’t even need a whole band to perform, just him and his acoustic, a looper pedal, a pedal board and of course his own talent. He doesn’t need background dancers or flashy lights, just himself. With this fancy equipment he is able to put on such a great show and carry such a large sound by himself. Ed Sheeran has maintained a positive image for pop music replacing the bad reputation of auto-tuned vocals.

In terms of his songwriting he write lyrics that are inspiring, original and meaningful. I’m sure many know that “A Team” is about a prostitute addicted to crack cocaine. It was written after Sheeran visited a homeless shelter and heard some of the stories of the lives people had been living. What’s different about the song is that although the lyrics are sad the music is somewhat upbeat and I think that’s an important quality to bring to a song. Just because a song is sad it doesn’t mean the beat has to follow that pattern, when it comes to music you have to take risks sometimes.

Ed Sheeran is without a doubt a talented songwriter. You know the song “Love Yourself” by Justin Bieber…that’s right Ed Sheeran wrote it, so no wonder it is good. One of the many reasons Ed Sheeran is also so talented is because of his magical vocals. He is able to carry a very strong falsetto.

You know for a fact that Ed Sheeran hasn’t and never would lip-sync a live performance. In my opinion you can always tell if an artist is talented by their live performances. When the live performance is better than the recorded version then you know they have star quality.

Ed Sheeran takes his influences and likes and puts them in his music. From his autobiography “Ed Sheeran A Visual Journey” he mentions how he enjoys rap/hip-hop music and this is reflected in his music, specifically in the tune “Sing,” and “You Need Me.” Sheeran raps parts of the songs, with his fast pace singing, which shows his versatility and uniqueness that he brings in his music.

Don’t Believe In Money That Is in Your Mind. Believe In Money That Is In Your Pocket: Music Industry Is Finally Making Money on Streaming!

After just about two decades of steady decay brought on by theft and falling costs, the music business is getting a charge out of a delicate recuperation on account of the development of paid gushing administrations like Spotify Ltd., and the one and only, Apple Music. Retail spending on recorded music grew 8.1 percent to $3.4 billion in the main portion of 2016, as indicated by a draft midyear report from the Recording Industry Association of America. That implies the U.S. industry is poised to extend for the second in a row year – the first consecutive development since 1998-1999. Gaining success and better yet money from streaming music online, definitely isn’t an easy task as there are ways to beat the system and get things for me. But I’ve noticed how certain artists don’t want that happening, so they have forbidden there music to be accessed through YouTube, which forces people to purchase their songs on ITunes.

The credit goes to gushing – Internet benefits that give audience members business free access to a huge number of melodies for a month to month expense – or for nothing on the off chance that they’re willing to hear advertisements. U.S. spilling income grew 57 percent to $1.6 billion in the primary portion of 2016 and represented portion of industry deals, more than countering contracting buys of collections and singles. Memberships totaled $1.01 billion, as indicated by the RIAA information.

We’re beginning to see on-interest music gushing as no more a thing that fashionable person school children and youngsters do.

The business is hesitant to proclaim triumph. Yearly deals have floated around $7 billion for a long time, around half from the 1999 top, as indicated by RIAA information. Then the marks are as yet arranging new contracts with Google Inc’s. YouTube and Spotify, two of the biggest purveyors of free music on the planet.

While deals from advertisement bolstered, on-interest spilling grew 24 percent to $195 million in the primary portion of 2016, as per the RIAA report, those administrations aren’t doing what’s necessary to persuade individuals to pay for music and don’t profit off their free clients. Nor is this the first run through with new innovation to motivate individuals to pay on the web.

Apple Inc. fellow benefactor Steve Jobs persuaded record marks that iTunes would spare the business from theft; just to vaporize collection deals by offering singles. However Apple is no more the main player in the business sector for advanced music. Spotify works a bigger paid membership benefit and has hinted at no backing off since Apple Music started contending in that business sector. The greater part of the clients for Apple Music are individuals new to paying music, not previous Spotify clients, as indicated by name officials.

In the interim, buys of music, whether downloaded or on a CD, proceed with their lofty plunge. Physical music deals tumbled 14 percent while downloads likewise shrank by a twofold digit rate. The entry of new contenders muddles the standpoint, contingent upon whether they pull in new clients or take from others. Amazon.com Inc., the world’s biggest Internet retailer, is putting resources into a paid music administration to offer different merchandise on the e-business website. It will present a standalone music administration before the years over, individuals with information of the matter said in June. Can’t you see? Now everyone wants in on the success! Why wouldn’t they? It’s like it is contagious. When something works, it works and people want to tackle onto that.

For me personally I just find it so much easier to purchase an artist’s songs on iTunes. It goes straight into your music on your phone and additionally you are supporting the artist. Trying to get music for free I find although it’s free it involves so much more work and sometimes the quality just isn’t the same. Everything is a business these days so the music industry needs to make money with online streaming and evidently it is finally succeeding. Also, I have found with ITunes that sometimes they have songs for a really cheap price like $0.69.

Pandora Media Inc., the biggest online radio administration on the planet, will likewise present a paid, on-interest administration by year’s end, and expects to change over 10 percent of its 78 million free clients into paying clients by 2020.

The digital music industry is a huge phenomenon these days. Statista gives us the run down of how successful it has been over the years.

Income produced by the digital music industry sales internationally increased by nine percent last year – from 5.1 billion U.S. dollars in 2011 to 5.6 billion U.S. dollars in 2012. The fame of online music is so, vast that in some countries specifically South Korea and the U.S. consumers now spend money on downloads and online music subscriptions like Spotify versus CDs. CDs are just becoming more obsolete. HIS Screen Digest predicts that another eight countries have joined the trend this year, in 2016.
